JEE Main 2025 — 3 April, Morning Shift — Question 51
During the melting of a slab of ice at 273 K at atmospheric pressure:
- Option A:
Internal energy of ice-water system remains unchanged
- Option B:
Internal energy of the ice-water system decreases
- Option C:
Positive work is done by the ice-water system on the atmosphere
- Option D:Correct
Positive work is done on the ice-water system by the atmosphere
Answer: D
Step-by-step solution
Melting of ice requires heat therefore internal energy increases. But because of decrease in volume
the work done on atmosphere is negative or atmosphere does positive work on ice-water system.
