JEE Main 2026 — 2 April, Morning Shift — Question 56

A salt with few drops of conc. HCl gives apple green colour in flame test. The group precipitate of the salt is dissolved in acetic acid and treated with K2CrO4\mathrm{K}_{2} \mathrm{CrO}_{4} to give yellow precipitate. When the sodium carbonate extract of the salt solution is heated with conc. HNO3\mathrm{HNO}_{3} and ammonium molybdate, it resulted a canary yellow precipitate. The cation and anion present in the salt are respectively.

  1. Option A:

    Ca2+\mathrm{Ca}^{2+} and SO42−\mathrm{SO}_{4}^{2-}

  2. Option B:

    Ba2+\mathrm{Ba}^{2+} and PO43−\mathrm{PO}_{4}^{3-}

    Correct
  3. Option C:

    Mn2+\mathrm{Mn}^{2+} and PO43−\mathrm{PO}_{4}^{3-}

  4. Option D:

    Ba2+\mathrm{Ba}^{2+} and SO42−\mathrm{SO}_{4}^{2-}

Answer: B

Step-by-step solution

Sol. (i) Ba+2\mathrm{Ba}^{+2} gives apple green colour while Ca+2\mathrm{Ca}^{+2} and Sr+2\mathrm{Sr}^{+2} gives brick red and crimson red in flame test. (ii) Ba+2+CrO42−→BaCrO4 Yellow ppt \mathrm{Ba}^{+2}+\mathrm{CrO}_{4}^{2-} \rightarrow \underset{\text { Yellow ppt }}{\mathrm{BaCrO}_{4}}
