NEET (UG) 2024 — Question 67

Given below are two statements:

Statement I: The boiling point of hydrides of Group 16 elements follow the order

H2O>H2Te>H2Se>H2 S\mathrm{H}_{2} \mathrm{O}>\mathrm{H}_{2} \mathrm{Te}>\mathrm{H}_{2} \mathrm{Se}>\mathrm{H}_{2} \mathrm{~S}.

Statement II: On the basis of molecular mass, H2O\mathrm{H}_{2} \mathrm{O} is expected to have lower boiling point than the

other members of the group but due to the presence of extensive H -bonding in

H2O\mathrm{H}_{2} \mathrm{O}, it has higher boiling point.

In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below:

  1. Option A:

Both Statement I and Statement II are true

  2. Option B:

Both Statement I and Statement II are false

  3. Option C:

Statement I is true but Statement II is false

  4. Option D:

Statement I is false but Statement II is true

    Correct

Answer: D

Step-by-step solution

Statement I is correct, because boiling point of hydrides of group 16 follows the order

H2O>H2Te>H2Se>H2 S\mathrm{H}_{2} \mathrm{O}>\mathrm{H}_{2} \mathrm{Te}>\mathrm{H}_{2} \mathrm{Se}>\mathrm{H}_{2} \mathrm{~S}.

Statement II due to intermolecular H -bonding H2O\mathrm{H}_{2} \mathrm{O} shows higher boiling point than

respective hydrides of group 16.

(Both Statement are true)

Order from H2Te\mathrm{H}_{2} \mathrm{Te} to H2 S\mathrm{H}_{2} \mathrm{~S} is due to decreasing molar mass.
