JEE Main 2024 — 5 April, Shift 2 — Question 79

The combustion of 1 mol of benzene is represented as C6H6(l)+152O2(g)→6CO2(g)+3H2O(l)\mathrm{C_6H_6(l) + \tfrac{15}{2}O_2(g) \rightarrow 6CO_2(g) + 3H_2O(l)}. The standard enthalpy of combustion of 2 mol of benzene is −x-x kJ. Calculate the value of xx, given that :

(1) Standard Enthalpy of formation of 1 mol of C6H6(1)\mathrm{C}_{6} \mathrm{H}_{6}(1), for the reaction 6 C (graphite) +3H2( g)→C6H6(1)+3 \mathrm{H}_{2}(\mathrm{~g}) \rightarrow \mathrm{C}_{6} \mathrm{H}_{6}(1) is 48.5 kJ mol−148.5 \mathrm{~kJ} \mathrm{~mol}^{-1}.

(2) Standard Enthalpy of formation of 1 mol of CO2( g)\mathrm{CO}_{2}(\mathrm{~g}), for the reaction C(graphite)+O2(g)→CO2(g)\mathrm{C(graphite) + O_2(g) \rightarrow CO_2(g)} is −393.5 kJ mol−1-393.5 \mathrm{~kJ} \mathrm{~mol}^{-1}.

(3) Standard and Enthalpy of formation of 1 mol of H2O(1)\mathrm{H}_{2} \mathrm{O}(1), for the reaction H2( g)+12O2( g)→H2O(1)\mathrm{H}_{2}(\mathrm{~g})+\frac{1}{2} \mathrm{O}_{2}(\mathrm{~g}) \rightarrow \mathrm{H}_{2} \mathrm{O}(1) is −286 kJ mol−1-286 \mathrm{~kJ} \mathrm{~mol}^{-1}.

Answer: 6535

Numerical answer — enter this value.

Step-by-step solution

Using Hess’s law, the standard enthalpy of combustion is calculated as:

ΔHcomb∘=∑ΔHf∘(products)−∑ΔHf∘(reactants)\Delta H^\circ_{\text{comb}} = \sum \Delta H_f^\circ(\text{products}) - \sum \Delta H_f^\circ(\text{reactants})

For the reaction

C6H6(l)+152O2(g)→6CO2(g)+3H2O(l),\mathrm{C_6H_6(l) + \tfrac{15}{2}O_2(g) \rightarrow 6CO_2(g) + 3H_2O(l)}, ΔHcomb∘=[6(−393.5)+3(−286)]−[1(48.5)]\Delta H^\circ_{\text{comb}} = \left[6(-393.5) + 3(-286)\right] - \left[1(48.5)\right] =(−2361−858)−48.5= (-2361 - 858) - 48.5 =−3267.5 kJ= -3267.5\,\text{kJ}

Thus, the standard enthalpy of combustion of 1 mol of benzene is −3267.5 kJ-3267.5\,\text{kJ}

For 2 mol of benzene, x=2×3267.5=6535 kJx = 2 \times 3267.5 = 6535\,\text{kJ}
