JEE Main 2024 — 31 January, Shift 2 — Question 76

In the reaction of potassium dichromate, potassium chloride and sulfuric acid (conc.), the oxidation state of the chromium in the product is (+)(+) \qquad .

Answer: 6

Numerical answer — enter this value.

Step-by-step solution

K2Cr2O7( s)+4KCl(s)+6H2SO4\mathrm{K}_{2} \mathrm{Cr}_{2} \mathrm{O}_{7}(\mathrm{~s})+4 \mathrm{KCl}(\mathrm{s})+6 \mathrm{H}_{2} \mathrm{SO}_{4} (conc.)

→2CrO2Cl2( g)+6KHSO4+3H2O\rightarrow 2 \mathrm{CrO}_{2} \mathrm{Cl}_{2}(\mathrm{~g})+6 \mathrm{KHSO}_{4}+3 \mathrm{H}_{2} \mathrm{O}

This reaction is called chromyl chloride test. Here oxidation state of Cr is +6 .
