JEE Main 2026 — 22 January, Evening Shift — Question 37

Given below are two statements :

Statement I: A satellite is moving around earth in the orbit very close to the earth surface. The time period of revolution of satellite depends upon the density of earth.

Statement II : The time period of revolution of the satellite is T=2πRegT=2 \pi \sqrt{\frac{R_{e}}{g}} (for satellite very close to the earth surface), where ReR_{e} radius of earth and gg acceleration due to gravity.

In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below :

  1. Option A:

    Both Statement I and Statement II are false

  2. Option B:

    Both Statement I and Statement II are true

    Correct
  3. Option C:

    Statement I is true but Statement II is false

  4. Option D:

    Statement I is false but Statement II is true

Answer: B

Step-by-step solution

T=2πR3GM\mathrm{T}=2 \pi \sqrt{\frac{\mathrm{R}^{3}}{\mathrm{GM}}} ∵M=ρ⋅43πR3\because \mathrm{M}=\rho \cdot \frac{4}{3} \pi \mathrm{R}^{3} ∴T=2gp1Gp43π\therefore \mathrm{T}=2 \mathrm{gp} \sqrt{\frac{1}{\mathrm{Gp} \frac{4}{3} \pi}} Statement I is correct. And ∴GMR2=g\therefore \frac{\mathrm{GM}}{\mathrm{R}^{2}}=\mathrm{g} ∴T=2πRg\therefore \mathrm{T}=2 \pi \sqrt{\frac{\mathrm{R}}{\mathrm{g}}} Statement II is correct
