Chemistry · Periodicity of Elements and Periodic Properties

JEE Main 2026 — 22 January, Evening Shift — Question 53

Given below are two statements : one is labelled as Statement I and the other is labelled as Statement II :

Statement-I : Element XX and YY are the most and least electronegative elements, respectively among N,As,Sb\mathrm{N, As, Sb} and P\mathrm{P}. The nature of the oxides X2O3\mathrm{X_2O_3} and Y2O3\mathrm{Y_2O_3} is acidic and amphoteric, respectively.

Statement-II : BCl3\mathrm{BCl}_{3} is covalent in nature and gets hydrolysed in water. It produces [B(OH)4]−\left[\mathrm{B}(\mathrm{OH})_{4}\right]^{-}and [B(H2O)6]3+\left[\mathrm{B}\left(\mathrm{H}_{2} \mathrm{O}\right)_{6}\right]^{3+} in aqueous medium.

In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below :

  1. Option A:

Both Statement-I and Statement-II are true.

  2. Option B:

Statement-I is true but Statement-II is false.

    Correct
  3. Option C:

Both Statement-I and Statement-II are false.

  4. Option D:

Statement-I is false but Statement-II is true.

Answer: B

Step-by-step solution

Statement-I: Among N,P,As,Sb\mathrm{N, P, As, Sb}, electronegativity decreases down the group. Thus most electronegative is N\mathrm{N} and least electronegative is Sb\mathrm{Sb}. N2O3\mathrm{N_2O_3} is acidic in nature and Sb2O3\mathrm{Sb_2O_3} is amphoteric. So, Statement-I is true.

Statement-II: BCl3\mathrm{BCl_3} is covalent and undergoes hydrolysis in water. But it forms B(OH)3\mathrm{B(OH)_3} and HCl\mathrm{HCl}. In aqueous medium, B(OH)3\mathrm{B(OH)_3} behaves as a Lewis acid and forms [B(OH)4]−\mathrm{[B(OH)_4]^-}. However, [B(H2O)6]3+\mathrm{[B(H_2O)_6]^{3+}} is not produced. So, Statement-II is false.

Hence, correct answer is option B.
