JEE Main 2024 — 29 January, Shift 1 — Question 62
Given below are two statements, one is labelled as Statement I and the other is labelled as Statement II.
Statement I : The electronegativity of group 14 elements from Si to Pb gradually decreases.
Statement II : Group 14 contains non-metallic, metallic, as well as metalloid elements.
In the light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate from the options given below :
- Option A:Correct
Statement I is false but Statement II is true
- Option B:
Statement I is true but Statement II is false
- Option C:
Both Statement I and Statement II are true
- Option D:
Both Statement I and Statement II are false
Answer: A
Step-by-step solution
Statement I is false: The electronegativity values of group 14 elements—Si (1.8), Ge (1.8), Sn (1.8) and Pb (1.9)—show that the electronegativity from Si to Pb is almost the same, not gradually decreasing. Hence, the statement claiming a gradual decrease is incorrect.
Statement II is true: Group 14 contains elements of different nature, including a non-metal (carbon), metalloids (silicon and germanium), and metals (tin and lead).
Therefore, Statement I is false but Statement II is true → Option A
