Chemistry · d and f Block Elements
JEE Main 2024 — 27 January, Shift 2 — Question 61
Given below are two statements, one is labelled as Statement I and the other is labelled as Statement II.
Statement (I) : In the Lanthanoids, the formation of is favoured by its noble gas configuration.
Statement (II) : is a strong oxidant reverting to the common +3 state.
In the light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below:
- Option A:
Statement I is false but Statement II is true
- Option B:Correct
Both Statement I and Statement II are true
- Option C:
Statement I is true but Statement II is false
- Option D:
Both Statement I and Statement II are false
Answer: B
Step-by-step solution
Statement (I) is true: Cerium has the electronic configuration . On forming , it attains the noble gas configuration , which stabilises the +4 oxidation state and favours its formation.
Statement (II) is true: readily gets reduced to the more stable and common +3 oxidation state. Hence, acts as a strong oxidising agent.
Thus, both Statement I and Statement II are true Option B.
