Given below are two statements : one is labelled as Statement I and the other is labelled as Statement II:
Statement I: The limiting force of static friction depends on the area of contact and independent of materials.
Statement II: The limiting force of kinetic friction is independent of the area of contact and depends on materials.
In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below :

Both statement I and statement Il are correct.
- Option B:
Statement I is correct and statement Il is incorrect.
- Option C:Correct
Statement I is incorrect and statement Il is correct.
- Option D:
Both statements 1 and statements ll are incorrect.

Step-by-step solution
Static friction (limiting) is independent of the area of contact and depends on the nature of materials in contact. Kinetic friction is also independent of the area of contact and depends on the materials. Therefore Statement I is incorrect (it wrongly says static friction depends on area and is independent of materials) and Statement II is correct.
