Chemistry · Periodicity of Elements and Periodic Properties
JEE Main 2025 — 24 January, Evening Shift — Question 36
Given below are two statements, one is labelled as Statement I and the other is labelled as Statement II.
Statement I : The first ionization energy of Pb is greater than that of Sn.
Statement II : The first ionization energy of Ge is greater than that of Si.
In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below :
- Option A:Correct
Statement I is true but Statement II is false
- Option B:
Both Statement I and Statement II are false
- Option C:
Statement I is false but Statement II is true
- Option D:
Both Statement I and Statement II are true
Answer: A
Step-by-step solution
In group 14, first ionization energy generally decreases down the group.
However, due to poor shielding by and electrons, Pb shows slightly higher ionization energy than Sn. Hence, Statement I is true.
From Si to Ge, ionization energy decreases. Thus Ge has lower ionization energy than Si. Hence, Statement II is false.
Therefore, the correct option is A.
