Chemistry · d and f Block Elements
JEE Main 2024 — 9 April, Shift 2 — Question 66
Given below are two statements, one is labelled as Statement I and the other is labelled as Statement II.
Statement I : The higher oxidation states are more stable down the group among transition elements unlike p-block elements.
Statement II : Copper can not liberate hydrogen from weak acids.
In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below :
- Option A:
Both Statement I and Statement II are false
- Option B:
Statement I is false but Statement II is true
- Option C:Correct
Both Statement I and Statement II are true
- Option D:
Statement I is true but Statement II is false
Answer: C
Step-by-step solution
Statement I is True: In transition elements, higher oxidation states become more stable down the group because larger atomic size and better delocalisation of d-electrons stabilise higher oxidation states. This trend is opposite to p-block elements, where higher oxidation states become less stable down the group due to the inert pair effect.
Statement II is True: Copper (Cu) is below hydrogen in the electrochemical series, so it cannot displace hydrogen from weak acids (e.g., acetic acid). It reacts only with strong oxidising acids.
Thus, Both Statement I and Statement II are true.
