Chemistry · p-Block (I) (Grp. 13, 14)
JEE Main 2024 — 1 February, Shift 2 — Question 74
Given below are two statements, one is labelled as Statement I and the other is labelled as Statement II.
Statement (I) : and are acidic while SnO and PbO are amphoteric in nature.
Statement (II) : Allotropic forms of carbon are due to property of catenation and bond formation.
In the light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below:
- Option A:
Both Statement I and Statement II are false
- Option B:
Both Statement I and Statement II are true
- Option C:Correct
Statement I is true but Statement II is false
- Option D:
Statement I is false but Statement II is true
Answer: C
Step-by-step solution
Statement I is True: In Group 14, and are acidic oxides, whereas and are amphoteric in nature. This is due to the increase in metallic character down the group. Statement II is False: The allotropy of carbon is mainly due to its strong catenation property. - bonding is not responsible for allotropy because carbon does not have vacant -orbitals. Thus, Statement I is true but Statement II is false (Option C).
