JEE Main 2024 — 1 February, Shift 2 — Question 62
Given below are two statements, one is labelled as Statement I and the other is labelled as Statement II.
Statement (I) : -bonding molecular orbital has lower electron density above and below the internuclear axis.
Statement (II) : The (antibonding) molecular orbital has a node between the nuclei.
In the light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below:
- Option A:
Both Statement I and Statement II are false
- Option B:
Both Statement I and Statement II are true
- Option C:Correct
Statement I is false but Statement II is true
- Option D:
Statement I is true but Statement II is false
Answer: C
Step-by-step solution
Statement I is Incorrect: In a -bonding molecular orbital, the electron density is maximum above and below the internuclear axis due to lateral overlap of atomic orbitals, not lower.
Statement II is Correct: A (antibonding) molecular orbital has a node between the nuclei because of out-of-phase overlap of atomic orbitals.
Thus, Statement I is false but Statement II is true (Option C).
