JEE Main 2024 — 5 April, Shift 1 — Question 68
Given below are two statements, one is labelled as Assertion (A) and the other is labelled as Reason (R).
Assertion (A): Cis form of alkene is found to be more polar than the trans form.
Reason (R): Dipole moment of trans isomer of 2-butene is zero.
In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below :
- Option A:Correct
Both (A) and (R) are true and (R) is the correct explanation of (A)
- Option B:
Both (A) and (R) are true but (R) is NOT the correct explanation of (A)
- Option C:
(A) is true but (R) is false
- Option D:
(A) is false but (R) is true
Answer: A
Step-by-step solution
Assertion (A) is True: In cis-alkenes, the bond dipoles do not cancel due to their asymmetric arrangement, so the molecule has a net dipole moment and is more polar than the trans form.
Reason (R) is True: In trans-2-butene, the bond dipoles are equal and opposite because of the symmetrical structure, resulting in a zero dipole moment.
The zero dipole moment of the trans isomer explains why the cis isomer is more polar.
Thus, Both (A) and (R) are true and (R) is the correct explanation of (A).
