JEE Main 2026 — 8 April, Evening Shift — Question 44

Given below are two statements:

Given: Molar masses of C,H,O,ClC, H, O, Cl are 12,1,16,12, 1, 16, and 35.5 g mol−135.5 \, \text{g mol}^{-1}, respectively.

Statement I: In 30% (w/w)30\% \, (w/w) solution of methanol in CCl4CCl_4 (at TT K), the mole fraction of CCl4CCl_4 is equal to 0.330.33.

Statement II: Mixture of methanol and CCl4CCl_4 shows positive deviation from Raoult’s law.

In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below :

  1. Option A:

Both Statement I and Statement II are ture

    Correct
  2. Option B:

Both Statement I and Statement II are false

  3. Option C:

Statement I is true but Statement II are false

  4. Option D:

Statement I is false but Statement II are ture

Answer: A

Step-by-step solution

(i) Let wt of solution =100 g= 100 \, \text{g} wt of methanol =30 g= 30 \, \text{g} wt of CCl4=100−30=70 gCCl_4 = 100 - 30 = 70 \, \text{g} Mole fraction of CCl4=nCCl4nCCl4+nCH3OH=7015470154+3032CCl_4 = \dfrac{n_{CCl_4}}{n_{CCl_4} + n_{CH_3OH}} = \dfrac{\frac{70}{154}}{\frac{70}{154} + \frac{30}{32}} =0.3267≈0.33= 0.3267 \approx 0.33 (ii) CCl4CCl_4 & methanol is mixture of positive deviation from Raoult’s law. So, statement (I) & statement (II) are correct.
