JEE Main 2025 — 3 April, Evening Shift — Question 28

Each of the angles β\beta and γ\gamma that a given line makes with the positive yy - and zz-axes, respectively, is half of the angle that this line makes with the positive xx-axes. Then the sum of all possible values of the angle β\beta is

  1. Option A:

    π\pi

  2. Option B:

    3π4\frac{3 \pi}{4}

    Correct
  3. Option C:

    π2\frac{\pi}{2}

  4. Option D:

    3π2\frac{3 \pi}{2}

Answer: B

Step-by-step solution

β=γ=α2\beta=\gamma=\frac{\alpha}{2}

cos⁡2α+cos⁡2β±cos⁡2y=1\cos ^{2} \alpha+\cos ^{2} \beta \pm \cos ^{2} y=1

cos⁡22β+cos⁡2β+cos⁡2β=1\cos ^{2} 2 \beta+\cos ^{2} \beta+\cos ^{2} \beta=1

(2cos⁡2β−1)2+(2cos⁡2β−1)=0\left(2 \cos ^{2} \beta-1\right)^{2}+\left(2 \cos ^{2} \beta-1\right)=0

(2cos⁡2β−1)[(2cos⁡2β−1+1]=0\left(2 \cos ^{2} \beta-1\right)\left[\left(2 \cos ^{2} \beta-1+1\right]=0\right.

cos⁡2β=12\cos ^{2} \beta=\frac{1}{2} or cos⁡2β=0\cos ^{2} \beta=0

∴β=π4,π2\therefore \quad \beta=\frac{\pi}{4}, \frac{\pi}{2}

∴\therefore sum =π4+π2=3π4=\frac{\pi}{4}+\frac{\pi}{2}=\frac{3 \pi}{4}
