JEE Main 2026 — 6 April, Evening Shift — Question 18

A moving coil of a galvanometer when shunted with 2Ω2\Omega resistance gives a full scale deflection for a current of 500mA500\mathrm{mA}. When a resistance of 470Ω470\Omega is connected in series it gives a full scale deflection for 10V10\mathrm{V} potential applied on it. The value of resistance of galvanometer coil is Ω\Omega.

Answer: 50

Numerical answer — enter this value.

Step-by-step solution

Let RgR_g be galvanometer resistance, IgI_g full scale current. Shunt case: IgRg=2(0.5−Ig)I_g R_g = 2(0.5 - I_g). Series case: 10=(Rg+470)Ig10 = (R_g + 470)I_g. Solving gives Rg=50ΩR_g = 50\Omega.
