JEE Advanced 2023 — Paper 2 — Question 32

Consider the following molecules: Br3O8\mathrm{Br_3O_8}, F2O\mathrm{F_2O}, H2S4O6\mathrm{H_2S_4O_6}, H2S5O6\mathrm{H_2S_5O_6}, and C3O2\mathrm{C_3O_2}. Count the number of atoms existing in their zero oxidation state in each molecule. Their sum is ______\_\_\_\_\_\_.

Answer: 6

Numerical answer — enter this value.

Step-by-step solution

For Br3O8\mathrm{Br_3O_8}: All Br\mathrm{Br} atoms are in positive oxidation state. Thus, zero oxidation atoms =0= 0

For F2O\mathrm{F_2O}: F=−1\mathrm{F} = -1, O=+2\mathrm{O} = +2

Thus, zero oxidation atoms =0= 0

For H2S4O6\mathrm{H_2S_4O_6}: Two central S\mathrm{S} atoms are bonded only to S\mathrm{S}. Thus, zero oxidation atoms =2= 2

For H2S5O6\mathrm{H_2S_5O_6}: Three central S\mathrm{S} atoms form S−S\mathrm{S-S} chain. Thus, zero oxidation atoms =3= 3

For C3O2\mathrm{C_3O_2}: Middle carbon is bonded only to carbon. Thus, zero oxidation atoms =1= 1.

Total =0+0+2+3+1=6= 0 + 0 + 2 + 3 + 1 = 6
