JEE Main 2024 — 4 April, Shift 1 — Question 15

Let α\alpha and β\beta be the sum and the product of all the non-zero solutions of the equation (zˉ)2+∣z∣=0,z∈C(\bar{z})^{2}+|z|=0, z \in C. Then 4(α2+β2)4\left(\alpha^{2}+\beta^{2}\right) is equal to :

  1. Option A:

    6

  2. Option B:

    4

    Correct
  3. Option C:

    8

  4. Option D:

    2

Answer: B

Step-by-step solution

z=x+iy\mathrm{z}=\mathrm{x}+\mathrm{iy}

zˉ=x−iy\bar{z}=x-i y

zˉ2=x2−y2−2ixy\bar{z}^{2}=x^{2}-y^{2}-2 i x y

⇒x2−y2−2ixy+x2+y2=0\Rightarrow x^{2}-y^{2}-2 i x y+\sqrt{x^{2}+y^{2}}=0

⇒x=0\Rightarrow \mathrm{x}=0 \quad or y=0\quad \mathrm{y}=0

−y2+∣y∣=0x2+∣x∣=0-y^{2}+|y|=0 \quad x^{2}+|x|=0

∣y∣=∣y∣2⇒x=0|y|=|y|^{2} \quad \Rightarrow x=0

y=0,±1y=0, \pm 1

⇒i,−i\Rightarrow \mathrm{i},-\mathrm{i}

⇒α=i−i=0\Rightarrow \alpha=\mathrm{i}-\mathrm{i}=0

are roots

β=i(−i)=1\beta=\mathrm{i}(-\mathrm{i})=1

4(0+1)=44(0+1)=4
