JEE Main 2026 — 6 April, Morning Shift — Question 59

Given below are two statements :

Statement-I : Methane can be prepared by decarboxylation of sodium ethanoate, Kolbe's electrolysis of sodium acetate and reaction of CH3MgBr\mathrm{CH}_{3} \mathrm{MgBr} with water.

Statement-II : Methane cannot be prepared from unsaturated hydrocarbons and by Wurtz reaction.

In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below.

  1. Option A:

    Both Statement-I and Statement-II are true.

  2. Option B:

    Both Statement-I and Statement-II are false.

  3. Option C:

    Statement-I is true but Statement-II is false.

  4. Option D:

    Statement-I is false but Statement-II is true.

    Correct

Answer: D

Step-by-step solution

Methane can not be prepared by Kolbe's electrolysis process. So, statement-1 is false

CH3−CH3+2CO2+2NaOH+H2\mathrm{CH}_{3}-\mathrm{CH}_{3}+2 \mathrm{CO}_{2}+2 \mathrm{NaOH}+\mathrm{H}_{2}

Ethane Methane also can not be prepared by Wurtz reaction so statement-2 is true

2R−X Na.oxyether  Wurtz reaction R−R+2NaX2 \mathrm{R}-\mathrm{X} \frac{\text { Na.oxyether }}{\text { Wurtz reaction }} \mathrm{R}-\mathrm{R}+2 \mathrm{NaX}

If R=−CH3\mathrm{R}=-\mathrm{CH}_{3} then ethane is formed not methane.
