Chemistry · Periodicity of Elements and Periodic Properties

JEE Main 2026 — 6 April, Morning Shift — Question 53

Given below are two statements :

Statement-I : Aluminium is more electropositive than thallium as the standard electrode potential value of EAl3+/Alo\mathrm{E}_{\mathrm{Al}^{3+} / \mathrm{Al}}^{\mathrm{o}} is negative and ETl3+/Tlo\mathrm{E}_{\mathrm{Tl}^{3+} / \mathrm{Tl}}^{\mathrm{o}} is positive.

Statement-II : The sum of first three ionization enthalpies of boron is very high when compared to that of aluminium. Due to this reason boron forms covalent compounds only and aluminium forms Al3+\mathrm{Al}^{3+} ion.

In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below.

  1. Option A:

    Both Statement-I and Statement-II are true.

    Correct
  2. Option B:

    Both Statement-I and Statement-II are false.

  3. Option C:

    Statement-I is true but Statement-II is false.

  4. Option D:

    Statement-I is false but Statement-II is true.

Answer: A

Step-by-step solution

EAl3+/Al0=−1.66 V\mathrm{E}_{\mathrm{Al}^{3+} / \mathrm{Al}}^{0}=-1.66 \mathrm{~V} ETl3+/Tlo=+1.26 V\mathrm{E}_{\mathrm{Tl}^{3+} / \mathrm{Tl}}^{\mathrm{o}}=+1.26 \mathrm{~V}

For B: IE +IE2+IE3=801+2427+3659=6887 kJ+\mathrm{IE}_{2}+\mathrm{IE}_{3}=801+2427+3659 =6887 \mathrm{~kJ}

Both statements are true
