Chemistry · Nitrogen Containing Organic Compounds
JEE Main 2024 — 31 January, Shift 2 — Question 62
Given below are two statements, one is labelled as Statement I and the other is labelled as Statement II.
Statement I: Aniline reacts with con. followed by heating at 453-473 K gives p-aminobenzene sulphonic acid, which gives blood red colour in the 'Lassaigne's test'.
Statement II: In Friedel - Craft's alkylation and acylation reactions, aniline forms salt with the catalyst. Due to this, nitrogen of aniline aquires a positive charge and acts as deactivating group.
In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below:
- Option A:
Statement I is false but statement II is true
- Option B:
Both statement I and statement II are false
- Option C:
Statement I is true but statement II is false
- Option D:Correct
Both statement I and statement II are true
Answer: D
Step-by-step solution
Statement I is True: Aniline reacts with concentrated on heating at to form p-aminobenzenesulphonic acid (sulphanilic acid). Since this compound contains both nitrogen and sulphur, it gives a blood-red colour in Lassaigne’s test due to formation of thiocyanate ion.
Statement II is True: In Friedel–Crafts alkylation and acylation reactions, aniline forms a salt with the catalyst. The nitrogen atom acquires a positive charge, which deactivates the benzene ring and hence aniline does not undergo these reactions.
Thus, both Statement I and Statement II are true (Option D).
