JEE Main 2026 — 28 January, Morning Shift — Question 57

Given below are two statements : one is labelled as Statement I and the other is labelled as Statement II :

Statement I : The number of pairs, from the following, in which both the ions are coloured in aqueous solution is 3 . [Sc3+,Ti3+],[Mn2+,Cr2+],[Cu2+,Zn2+]\left[\mathrm{Sc}^{3+}, \mathrm{Ti}^{3+}\right],\left[\mathrm{Mn}^{2+}, \mathrm{Cr}^{2+}\right],\left[\mathrm{Cu}^{2+}, \mathrm{Zn}^{2+}\right] and [Ni2+,Ti4+]\left[\mathrm{Ni}^{2+}, \mathrm{Ti}^{4+}\right]

Statement II : Th4+\mathrm{Th}^{4+} is the strongest reducing agent among Th4+,Ce4+,Gd3+\mathrm{Th}^{4+}, \mathrm{Ce}^{4+}, \mathrm{Gd}^{3+} and Eu2+\mathrm{Eu}^{2+}.

In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below

  1. Option A:

Statement I is true but Statement II is false

  2. Option B:

Statement I is false but Statement II is true

  3. Option C:

Both Statement I and Statement II are false

    Correct
  4. Option D:

Both Statement I and Statement II are true

Answer: C

Step-by-step solution

Sc3+,Ti4+\mathrm{Sc}^{3+}, \mathrm{Ti}^{4+} and Zn2+\mathrm{Zn}^{2+} are colourless Th4+\mathrm{Th}^{4+} cannot act as a reducing agent.
