JEE Main 2026 — 23 January, Evening Shift — Question 53

Given below are two statements, one is labelled as Statement I and the other is labelled as Statement II.

Statement I: The second ionisation enthalpy of Na is larger than the corresponding ionisation enthalpy of Mg.

Statement II: The ionic radius of O2−\mathrm{O}^{2-} is larger than that of F−\mathrm{F}^{-}.

In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below:

  1. Option A:

Both statement I and statement II are true

    Correct
  2. Option B:

Both statement I and statement II are false

  3. Option C:

Statement I is false but statement II is true

  4. Option D:

Statement I is true but statement II is false

Answer: A

Step-by-step solution

Statement I: Na=[Ne] 3s1\mathrm{Na} = [\mathrm{Ne}]\,3s^1

After first ionization, we have

Na+=[Ne]\mathrm{Na^+} = [\mathrm{Ne}] (noble gas configuration)

Second ionization removes electron from stable core, so energy required is very large.

Mg=[Ne] 3s2\mathrm{Mg} = [\mathrm{Ne}]\,3s^2

After first ionization, Mg+=[Ne] 3s1\mathrm{Mg^+} = [\mathrm{Ne}]\,3s^1

Second ionization removes a 3s3s electron, not from noble gas core. Thus second ionisation enthalpy of Na\mathrm{Na} is larger than that of Mg\mathrm{Mg}. Thus, the statement I is true.

Statement II: O2−\mathrm{O^{2-}} and F−\mathrm{F^-} are isoelectronic (10 electrons). In an isoelectronic series, radius decreases with increase in nuclear charge. Since ZO=8Z_{\mathrm{O}} = 8 and ZF=9Z_{\mathrm{F}} = 9, O2−\mathrm{O^{2-}} has larger radius than F−\mathrm{F^-}. Thus, the statement II is true.
