Chemistry · Periodicity of Elements and Periodic Properties

JEE Main 2024 — 29 January, Shift 2 — Question 73

Given below are two statements, one is labelled as Statement I and the other is labelled as Statement II.

Statement I: Fluorine has most negative electron gain enthalpy in its group.

Statement II: Oxygen has least negative electron gain enthalpy in its group.

In the light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate from the options given below.

  1. Option A:

Both Statement I and Statement II are true

  2. Option B:

Statement I is true but Statement II is false

  3. Option C:

Both Statement I and Statement II are false

  4. Option D:

Statement I is false but Statement II is true

    Correct

Answer: D

Step-by-step solution

In group 17: Electron gain enthalpy is most negative for Cl\mathrm{Cl} and not for F\mathrm{F} due to greater electron–electron repulsion in F\mathrm{F}. Hence, Statement I is false.

In group 16: Oxygen has less negative electron gain enthalpy compared to sulphur because of small size and higher inter-electronic repulsion. Thus oxygen has the least negative value in its group. Hence, Statement II is true.

Therefore, the correct option is D.
