Chemistry · Alkyl and Aryl Halides
JEE Main 2024 — 8 April, Shift 2 — Question 63
Given below are two statements, one is labelled as Statement I and the other is labelled as Statement II.
Statement (I) : reactions are 'stereospecific', indicating that they result in the formation only one stereo-isomers as the product.
Statement (II) : reactions generally result in formation of product as racemic mixtures.
In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below :
- Option A:
Statement I is true but Statement II is false
- Option B:
Statement I is false but Statement II is true
- Option C:Correct
Both Statement I and Statement II is true
- Option D:
Both Statement I and Statement II is false
Answer: C
Step-by-step solution
Statement I is True: reactions are stereospecific. They proceed via a single-step backside attack, which leads to inversion of configuration (Walden inversion). Hence, only one stereoisomer is formed as the product.
Statement II is True: reactions proceed through the formation of a planar carbocation intermediate. Since the nucleophile can attack from either side of the planar carbocation, the products are generally formed as a racemic mixture (mixture of enantiomers).
Thus, the correct answer is Both Statement I and Statement II is true.
