Chemistry · p-Block (I) (Grp. 13, 14)
JEE Main 2024 — 31 January, Shift 2 — Question 68
Given below are two statements, one is labelled as Statement I and the other is labelled as Statement II.
Statement I: Group 13 trivalent halides get easily hydrolysed by water due to their covalent nature.
Statement II: upon hydrolysis in acidified aqueous solution forms octahedral ion.
In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below :
- Option A:Correct
Both statement I and statement Il are correct.
- Option B:
Statement I is correct and statement Il is incorrect.
- Option C:
Statement I is incorrect and statement Il is correct.
- Option D:
Both statements 1 and statements ll are incorrect.
Answer: A
Step-by-step solution
Statement I is Correct: Group 13 trivalent halides such as are largely covalent due to the small size and high charge density of the metal ion. Because of this covalent nature, they undergo easy hydrolysis in the presence of water.
Statement II is Correct: On hydrolysis in an acidified aqueous solution, forms the octahedral hexaaqua complex .
Thus, both Statement I and Statement II are correct (Option A).
