Chemistry · Periodicity of Elements and Periodic Properties
JEE Main 2024 — 1 February, Shift 2 — Question 64
Given below are two statements, one is labelled as Statement I and the other is labelled as Statement II.
Statement (I) : Both metal and non-metal exist in -and -block elements.
Statement (II) : Non-metals have higher ionisation enthalpy and higher electronegativity than the metals.
In the light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below:
- Option A:
Both Statement I and Statement II are false
- Option B:Correct
Statement I is false but Statement II is true
- Option C:
Statement I is true but Statement II is false
- Option D:
Both Statement I and Statement II are true
Answer: B
Step-by-step solution
Statement I is false: Both metals and non-metals are found in the -block, but the -block contains only metals. Therefore, it is incorrect to say that both metals and non-metals exist in both - and -block elements.
Statement II is true: In general, non-metals have higher ionisation enthalpy and higher electronegativity than metals due to their smaller atomic size and greater tendency to attract electrons.
Thus, statement I is false but statement II is true (Option B).
