Chemistry · Some Basic Concepts of Chemistry (Mole Concept) + Stoichiometry
JEE Main 2024 — 1 February, Shift 1 — Question 72
Given below are two statements, one is labelled as Statement I and the other is labelled as Statement II.
Statement (I) : Potassium hydrogen phthalate is a primary standard for standardisation of sodium hydroxide solution.
Statement (II) : In this titration phenolphthalein can be used as indicator.
In the light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below:
- Option A:Correct
Both Statement I and Statement II are correct
- Option B:
Statement I is correct but Statement II is incorrect
- Option C:
Statement I is incorrect but Statement II is correct
- Option D:
Both Statement I and Statement II are incorrect
Answer: A
Step-by-step solution
Statement I is Correct: Potassium hydrogen phthalate (KHP) is a primary standard because it is pure, stable, non-hygroscopic, and has a high molar mass. Hence, it is commonly used for the standardisation of sodium hydroxide solution.
Statement II is Correct: In the titration of KHP (weak acid) with NaOH (strong base), the equivalence point lies in the basic range, so phenolphthalein is a suitable indicator.
Thus, both Statement I and Statement II are correct (Option A).
