Chemistry · Ionic Equilibrium

JEE Main 2024 — 27 January, Shift 1 — Question 68

Given below are two statements, one is labelled as Assertion (A) and the other is labelled as Reason (R).

Statement (I) : Aqueous solution of ammonium carbonate is basic.

Statement (II) : Acidic/basic nature of salt solution of a salt of weak acid and weak base depends on Ka\mathrm{K}_{\mathrm{a}} and Kb\mathrm{K}_{b} value of acid and the base forming it.

In the light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below :

  1. Option A:

Both statement I and statement Il are correct.

    Correct
  2. Option B:

Statement I is correct and statement Il is incorrect.

  3. Option C:

Statement I is incorrect and statement Il is correct.

  4. Option D:

Both statements 1 and statements ll are incorrect.

Answer: A

Step-by-step solution

Statement (I) is correct: Ammonium carbonate [(NH4)2CO3][(\mathrm{NH_4)_2CO_3}] is a salt of a weak acid (H2CO3)(\mathrm{H_2CO_3}) and a weak base (NH4OH)\mathrm{(NH_4OH}). For such salts, the nature of the aqueous solution depends on the relative values of KaK_a and KbK_b. Since, Kb(NH4OH)>Ka(H2CO3)K_b(\mathrm{NH_4OH}) > K_a(\mathrm{H_2CO_3}), the aqueous solution is basic.

Statement (II) is correct: For salts formed from a weak acid and a weak base, the acidic or basic nature of the solution depends on the values of KaK_a and KbK_b of the acid and base forming the salt.

Thus, both Statement I and Statement II are correct →\rightarrow Option A.
