JEE Main 2024 — 5 April, Shift 2 — Question 64

Given below are two statements, one is labelled as Assertion (A) and the other is labelled as Reason (R).

Assertion (A) : NH3\mathrm{NH}_{3} and NF3\mathrm{NF}_{3} molecule have pyramidal shape with a lone pair of electrons on nitrogen atom. The resultant dipole moment of NH3\mathrm{NH}_{3} is greater than that of NF3\mathrm{NF}_{3}.

Reason (R): In NH3\mathrm{NH}_{3}, the orbital dipole due to lone pair is in the same direction as the resultant dipole moment of the N−H\mathrm{N}-\mathrm{H} bonds. F is the most electronegative element.

In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below:

  1. Option A:

Both (A) and (R) are true and (R) is the correct explanation of (A).

    Correct
  2. Option B:

Both (A) and (R) are true and (R) is NOT the correct explanation of (A).

  3. Option C:

    (A) is true but (R) is false.

  4. Option D:

    (A) is false but (R) is true.

Answer: A

Step-by-step solution

Assertion (A) is True: Both NH3\mathrm{NH_3} and NF3\mathrm{NF_3} are trigonal pyramidal molecules with alone pair of electrons on the nitrogen atom. The resultant dipole moment of NH3\mathrm{NH_3} is greater than that of NF3\mathrm{NF_3}.

Reason (R) is True and correct explanation: In NH3\mathrm{NH_3}, the dipole moment due to the lone pair is in the same direction as the resultant dipole moment of the N−HN-H bonds, leading to a larger net dipole moment. In NF3\mathrm{NF_3}, because fluorine is highlyelectronegative, the N−FN-F bond dipoles oppose the lone-pair dipole, resulting in a smaller net dipole moment.

Therefore, both (A) and (R) are true and (R) is the correct explanation of (A).
